Description

Worldview is a conceptual artwork that explores the idea of subjectivity and having a unique worldview, playing on the paradox that machine sensors are not the same as human senses — for reasons rooted in the interconnectedness of human senses with the body, memory, values, and other human things that machines do not have innately, regardless of their behavioral equivalence. Building a machine, then, is very similar to building a sophisticated puppet, onto which one projects one's own qualities — and building a puppet indistinguishable from a real human is an achievement of an illusionist rather than a scientist. More rigorous tests are needed to discover the true nature of the human or the machine, rather than mimicry tests such as the Turing test. The artwork is an invitation to the viewer to rethink the narrative around AI, and to think about the science around AI, in order to free oneself from illusion — because the truth sets you free.
